Disciples are Obedient // Be One Before You Build One // Pastor Troy Culbreth Sr.
Matthew 28:18–20 reminds us that Jesus has all authority and calls us to make disciples by teaching, baptizing, and modeling obedience to His Word. But before we can make disciples, we must first be true disciples ourselves—learners, imitators, and followers who don’t just hear the Word but live it out. A disciple attaches their life to Jesus, imitating His prayer, compassion, forgiveness, service, boldness, and dependence on the Father. In Scripture, obedience (Shama) means to hear and respond with action, not just with words or rituals. True discipleship is proven by obedience—aligning our lives with God’s Word out of love and relationship, not duty. Hypocrisy kills discipleship, but authenticity fuels it: we can’t reproduce what we don’t practice, nor lead others where we haven’t gone ourselves. Obedience unlocks blessings, inspires others, and shows our love for Christ. Being a disciple is not about perfection but daily surrender, choosing to grow step by step as the Spirit transforms us. Legacy isn’t built on what we say but on how we live, and our lives become the clearest example of the call to go and make disciples.
