57 years since its inception, The Well Church Cincinnati (formerly Tryed Stone New Beginning Church) has fought and weathered many storms, yet the anchor held. Having survived violent racial times, turbulent economic crises and deadly pandemics, the church has remained vigilant and true to its commitment to preach the Kingdom and destroy the works of the enemy. Once this foundation was set, we established our focus in digging wells, reaching the lost and saving lives. We are a community of believers, broken and restored, where others can encounter love, experience freedom and live on purpose. Welcome to The Well Church Cincinnati!
In June of 1966, a group of members from the Second Trinity Baptist Church began meeting in the home of Rev. Aaron Bland. Upon meeting, it was decided to remain together as a Church. Two years later in 1968, where the first service was conducted at 2815 Woodburn Avenue, the group unanimously named the church Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist Church (TSMBC). A pulpit committee consisting of Deacon Alfred Williams and Bro. Jesse Jones, contacted Rev. Anderson Culbreath to fill the pulpit as interim Pastor. Reverend Culbreath accepted and served from the first Sunday in July through September.
As acting Pastor, he was ordained and then officially elected to be the Pastor of Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist Church in October of 1969. In 1979, we had outgrown the building on 2815 Woodburn Ave., and God - in His infinite wisdom - saw fit to bless us with a facility at 5015 Reading Road. When we purchased this facility, we vowed with God’s help that we would pay off the Mortgage within seven years from the day we took ownership. Surely the Lord was faithful, for He enabled us to eliminate the Mortgage in seven years and seven days.
In 1983, The Lord blessed TSMBC with record-breaking membership of 1,015 in the congregation. The numbers continued to grow until a larger facility was needed. We had our groundbreaking Ceremony with the new site at 5550 Reading Road on September 22, 1990 which comprised our new Worship Sanctuary and Christian Education Center, and Day Care Facility.
In 2001 Elder Arnold Culbreath was installed as Senior Pastor of Tryed Stone while Elder Jerry Culbreth was sent to New Beginning Christian Fellowship to serve as interim pastor by Overseer Anderson Culbreath. A year forward, in 2002, Elder James Bready was installed as Assistant pastor and Elder Rodney Jones was hired as full time youth pastor at Tryed Stone. Elder Jerry Culbreth was ordained as pastor of New Beginning Christian Fellowship by the elders of Tryed Stone. In 2004, Pastor Arnold Culbreath resigned as pastor of Tryed Stone Missionary Baptist and Elder James Bready was selected as Interim Pastor. In 2005, Dr. Anderson Culbreath was received into the Kingdom.
At the time, Pastor Jerry Culbreth of New Beginning Christian Fellowship was asked by the Elders of Tryed Stone to come and serve as a guest pastor. In 2006, In a sovereign move of God, the Tryed Stone and New Beginning locations merged as one joint congregation and the name of church was changed to Tryed Stone New Beginning Church (TSNBC). Approximately 150 New Beginning members joined with Pastor Jerry Culbreth and he served the Kingdom here for the next 26 years insuring it would remain a wellspring of hope. Pastor Culbreth and the first lady retired to Georgia in 2022.
Today, moving toward a new strategic vision in 2023, we remain committed to digging wells and reaching the lost. Upon Pastor Jerry Culbreth's retirement, his son, Pastor Troy Culbreth, was installed as the Lead Pastor and Elder of TSNBC in July of 2022. Having the blessing of growing up in the faith and in this church community, Pastor Troy holds both the value of the past and the promise of the future close to his heart and vision. Newly established priorities moving forward would bring TSNBC into new light and to a place where living water flows fresh and abundantly.
In October of 2023, after a renewed vision and strategic plan, the board of Elders voted unanimously to rename the church to The Well Church Cincinnati to better reflect our community and faith commitment to reaching the lost as Jesus reached the woman at the well - a focus that hasn't shifted since 1966. Join us now and moving forward as we continue building more wells, flowing broader and deeper, and inviting everyone to "come have a drink".
