Come and Learn (Part 2) // Love People // Troy Culbreth Sr.

Oct 27, 2024

In recent weeks, we've focused on three core instructions Jesus gave, each paired with a promise that shapes our journey of faith. These instructions remind us of God's promise to transform, restore, and journey with us. First, in Matthew 4:19, Jesus says, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men”—a call to follow Him and be transformed. In Matthew 11:28, He invites us, “Come to Me…and I will give you rest,” offering restoration for weary souls. Lastly, in Matthew 28:19, He commands us to "Go and make disciples,” assuring us of His constant presence.

Last week, we focused on Jesus’s call to “Come to Me,” exploring the peace and rest He promises. But what does it mean to love and follow Him fully? Jesus gives us two foundational commandments: Love God and Love People. Everything in our faith hinges on these. But how do we truly live them out?

To love God fully means loving Him with all our heart, soul (or “nephesh” in Hebrew, meaning our whole being), and mind. This includes:

Heart: Loving God for who He is, being captivated by His love.

Soul: Letting every part of our physical life honor Him.

Mind: Holding every thought up to His Word, aligning our thinking with His truth.

Loving our neighbor, as Jesus explained through the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:29-37, means actively caring for others, showing kindness, compassion, and generosity in action. This love reflects God’s heart and sets us apart as His disciples (John 13:34-35).

Today, let’s consider practical steps to live out these commands:

Be a Gospel Neighbor: Share God’s love through acts of kindness and service.

Show Intentional Compassion: Like the Good Samaritan, help others selflessly.

Follow Jesus’ New Commandment: Love one another as He has loved us.

In each of these ways, we embody Jesus’ love, letting our lives shine as a testimony of His presence in us. Through this love, others will come to know Him.
